sufficient measiu-c of Roman blood to ensui-e a respectable position in tlie town be dwelt in, and
careful interment in its cemetery, had many ineffaceable marks of an ancestry in which an
aborigmal, probably Brigantian,.. taint was mingled. Whence these were derived it is now far

regarded as that of a Romanized Briton, or, in other words, Romano-British, and we consider
It to be of the late Roman period, perhaps about the fifth century. It wiU be seen to eshibit
a close resemblance to another from the Brigantian region, that from Green Gate HiR Barrow
near Pickering (Plate 4).
