GENERIC CHARACTER.
Calix ten-cleft, the exterior segments reflexed. Corolla sub-campanulate, five-lobed;
lobes emargiriate, and having staminiferous, marginated pits near the base.
Stamens short. Filaments naked. Capsules fleshy, 1-locular, 2-valved. Seeds
four. Nutt.
SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
Herb succulent, annual; stem three-sided j leaves alternate, pinnatifid; peduncles
very long, one-flowered, opposite-leaved, the top somewhat branched; the
branches incurved j fruit deflexed j corolla before inflorescence convoluted.
Allied to Hydrophyllum. Nutt.
I Root fibrous, annual, but more commonly biennial. Stem fragile,
smooth, somewhat tender and diaphanous. Plant convex, twelve
