Calix biparted. Petals S. Stigma trifid. Capsule 1-celled, 3-valved, 3 to 5-seeded.

SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
Leaves linear-lanceolate; racemes solitary; leaves of the calix somewhat acute;
petals obovate, retuse; root tuberous. Pursh.
Root perennial, tuberous, umber-brow, of various shapes, often obscurely
quadrangular, with projecting angles, from which very small
radicles proceed. Leaves long or linear-lanceolate, somewhat fleshy,
glabrous, with a conspicuous mid-rib, but without veins, and terminating
in a long point. They are of a bright yellow-green, and of the
