GENERIC CHARACTER.
Calix 5-leaved; two of the leaves in the form of wings, and coloured. Capsule obcor-
date, 2-celled, 2-valved.
SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
Plant small; large-flowered; stems simple, erect, naked below; leaves ovate, acute,
smooth; flowers terminal, generally three. B.

P olygala uniflora, Mich. FI. Boreal. ?
Root creeping, perennial. Plant from three to four, rarely five
inches high. Stem naked below, or garnished with two or three small
alternate leaves, cylindrical, smooth, procumbent at base, and surcu-
lose. The surculi being generally about two in number, one situated
