LON DON: E. CLAY, SONS, AND TAVLOE, PRINTERS.
BY SIR WY V IL L E THOMSON, F.R.S.
THE DEPTHS OE THE SEA.
AN ACCOUNT OF THE GENERAL RESULTS
OF THE
DREDGING CRUISES OF H.M.SS. “ LIGHTNING” AND “ PORCUPINE”
DURING THE SUMMERS OF 1808-69-70.
UNDER THE SCIENTIFIC DIRECTION OF
DR. CARPENTER, F.R.S., J. GWYNN JEFFREYS, F.R.S.,
AND
SIR WYVILLE THOMSON, F.R.S.
W ITH NUMEROUS IL LU ST R A T IO N S , COLOURED MA P S , ETC.
Second Edition. Medium 8vo. 31a 6d.
TIMES .
“ Even to the non-soientifio reader, who understands neither Latin names nor
Miller-Casella thermometers, this hook of Sir Wyville Thomson’s may still be
full of interest, if he who glances at it cares to see what a wonderful world he
lives in, and how very little he knows of it. The book is worth having only
for its illustrations. Looking at the engravings, it is not too much to say that
no such illustrations of the peculiarly delicate and complicated forms of lower
animal life have yet appeared.”
SATURDAY REVIEW.
“ Marked throughout by logical command of facts, noless than by patience and
skill in accumulating them. The mastery which Sir Wyville Thomson shows
over the results arrived at during this comparatively restricted series of explorations,
augurs well for the harvest of knowledge to be reaped, we may hope,
in the course of the more adequately equipped, and more instructive survey,
over which he has now gone forth in supreme control.”
STANDARD.
“ It is not too much to say that all who wish to follow what the ‘ Challenger ’
does, must be acquainted with what has been done by other vessels previously
lent by the Admiralty. When the ‘ Challenger’s ’ expedition is over, we shall
be better able to approach the consideration of the theories which are advanced
or quoted by Sir Wyville Thomson, in this copiously illustrated, most interesting,
and valuable record of invaluable research.”
