a species of Antedon, some corals the same as those
off Nightingale Island, and a quantity of bryozoa.
In the evening aa'c set all plain sail, and, with a
favouring breeze from the north-west, joroceeded on
our voyage toAvards the Cape.
On the 20th of October Ave sounded in 2,100
fathoms, on hard ground, Avith a bottom temperature
of 1°T C., and p u t the dredge over. The dredge
got entangled at the bottom, and was disengaged Avith
some difficulty ; it came up in the evening q\iite
emj)ty, and we made all plain sail and proceeded on
onr way.
On the 21st the weather changed, the wind dro^)-
ping round to the S.S.E., and blowing very cold AA'ith
force = 8. TVe ran on under double-reefed topsails,
and during that day and the next made nearly 350
miles.
On the 23rd Ave put the dredge over early, and
veered to 3,000 fathoms ; and after breakfast Ave
sounded in 2,550 fathoms, with a bottom of reddish
clay and a bottom temperature of 0°- 7 C., the position
of the sounding being lat. 35° 59' S., long. 1° 25' E.
The dredo;e contained little save some scarlet caridid
and peneid shrimps ; but two small star-hslies gave
evidence that it bad readied the bottom.
On the 25th aa'C sounded in 2,650 fathoms, Avith a
bottom of reddish clay, and a bottom temperature of
1°’0 C. ; and on the 27th in 2,325 fathoms, with a
bottom of grey ooze Avith nodules of hlack manganese,
and a bottom temperature of 0°’47 C. The
distance from the Cajoe of Good Hope at noon Avas
138 miles. A series of temperature soundings Avas
taken at intervals of ten fathoms from the surface
