outer antenna Avith one tooth ; a long central spine
on the posterior liorder of the dorsal shield, h n t no
lateral spines ; length (50 mm. A single specimen of
this species occurred (Station 73). On comparing the
figures of these two species and of their anatomical
details Avith those of Lophogaster given by Sars, one
is struck hy their great general similarity ; h n t there
are characters presented hy the nevA^ genns, parti-
cnlarlv in connection Avith the dorsal shield, Avhich
not only entirely separate it from Lophogaster hnt
enlarge onr A'iews on the Avliole schizopod gronp. In
both species the shield is scnlptnred by ridges
traversing it in different directions, and in both there
is a long spiny rostrnm ; h n t this shield is merely a
soft dnplicatnre of the skin connected Avith the body
only anteriorly, and leaving five thoracic segments
entirely free. In the strnctnre of the shield and
in its mode of attachment Gnathophausia has the
greatest resemblance to Apns among all crnstaceams,
hnt it differs from it Avidely in other respects.
Nehalia is the only schizopod in which the carapace
is not connected Avith the posterior thoracic segments,
hnt in th a t genns the form of the carapace is totally
different, and the genera are otherAvise in no way
nearly related. Neither the antennæ, nor th e scales,
nor the parts of the mouth, present any marked
differences from those of Lophogaster, with the
exception of the second maxillæ. These, with nearly
the same form as in the Norwegian genus, bear a
pair of accessory eyes. Such eyes are well known at
the base of the thoracic and even of the abdominal
limbs in the Euphausidae, a family Avith which the
LophogastriDaE have otherwise nothing in common,
hut hitherto they have not been met AAnth in any
other animal on any of the manducatory organs.
Of the eight pairs of legs seven are ambulatory,
only the first pair is, as in Lophogaster, transformed
into maxillipeds. The gills are arborescent and
attached to the bases of the legs. The abdomen and its
appendages scarcely differ from those of LophogaMer.
We find here also th at the last segment is ajoparently
diAdded into two. This would indicate an approach
to such forms as Nebalia, which has nine abdominal
segments, or at all events a tendency to a multiplication
of segments which if really existing would
scarcely allow the association of the genus Avith the
true schizopods.
The weather was remarkably fine. During the day
the Island of Elores Avas visible like a cloud on the
horizon about fifty miles to the northward. As our
sounding was comparatively shalloAv our position Avas
probably on a southern extension of the rise Avhich
culminates northwards in Elores and Corvo. One of
the most remarkahle differences betAveen the Açores
