On the 28th we stojijied at 7 a.m., and sounded in
1,250 fathoms Avith a bottom of grey mud. Table
IMountain and the range of hills above Simon Bay
being fairly visible on tbe north-eastern horizon.
AYe took a series of temperatures at intervals of ten
fathoms down to a hundred. At noon Ave took a
second series, fifteen nautical miles to the south-west
of the Cape of Good Hojoe, and Ave fonnd th a t in the
interA'al Ave had jiassed into the loop of the Agulhas
current, Avhich curls round the Cape close to the land.
The contrast betAveen tbe two series is remarkable.

The temperature of the air likewise rose perceptibly,
the thermometer in the shade indicating at noon
15° C., nearly three degrees ahove the average of the
same hour during tbe previous week.
At two o’clock p.m. Ave rounded the Cape, and
signalled our nnmber to H.Al.S. ‘ Battlesnake, just
returned from the scene of tbe Asliantee AAYr; and
an hour later Ave cast anchor in Simon’s Bay, and
bade farewell for many a long day to the friendly
waters of the Atlantic.
