interest were fonnd entangled in the swahs, or sifted
ont of the mnd. A schizopod crnstacean of large
size, and great beanty of form and brilliancy of
colonring, came np in this hanl. Dr. Amn Willemoes-
Snlim regards it as congeneric Avith the species taken
at Station G9 at a depth of 2,200 fathoms, and as
these crnstaceans are among onr most interesting
acquisitions during the voyage between Bermndas
and the Acores, I Avill abstract a brief description of
them from his notes.
The tAVO crnstaceans for Avliose reception Dr. von
Willemoes-Snhm proposes to establish the genns
Gnathophausia present characters which have hitherto
been fonnd partly in schizopods and partly in
phyllopods, h n t not combined in the same animal.
They are, hoAA’ever, essentially schizopods, and have
mnch in common Avitli Lopliogaster, a genns described
in great detail hy the late Prof. Sars. I t is proposed
to refer Gnathophausia to the family L opiiogastridae,
Avhich mnst he someAAdiat modified aud expanded for
its reception.
In Gnathophausia the dorsal shield covers the
thoracic segments of the body, but it is unconnected
Avitli the last live of these. The shield is prolonged
anteriorly into a spiny rostrum. The stalked eyes
are fairly developed in the ordinary position. There
is an auxiliary eye on each of the maxillae of the
second pair.
The tAvo species of the genus are thus distinguished
: G. gigas, n. sp. (Fig. 6). Scale of the outer
antenna Avith five teeth ; dorsal shield AAutli the outer
angles of its posterior border produced into spines ;
no posterior spine in the middle line ; length 112 mm.
