At daybreak on tlie 3rd Ave steamed out of
Clarence Bay, and swung skip for errors of the compasses.
In the afternoon Ave put OA'er the dredge
Avitli fair result. The assemhlage of animal forms
AA'as A'ery much like th a t off Tristan d’Acunha, Avitli
the addition of a fcAv more tropical species, such as
Stylaster erubescens and a species of Ilemi-euryale.
In tbe evening we set sail and proceeded toAvards
our next place of call, San lago in the Cape Verde
group.
On tlie 4tli Ave sounded in 1,260 fathoms Avitli a
hottom of glohigerina-ooze and a hottom temperature
of 2°'l C., and on the 6tli, in 2,350 fathoms. The
sonnding-tuhe hrouglit np a fcAV glohigerina shells
and grains of manganese ; the hottom temperature
Avas 0°‘4 C. The dredge Avas put over, hut unfortunately
it came np Avitli the tangles foul and over the
mouth ; the nnmher of animals was consequently
small, hut three fine specimens of a ncAV species of
Porcellanaster remarkahle for a series of long spines
running along the centre of the hack of eacli ray,
two samples of Brisinga, hroken as usual, a feAV of
Ophioglyplia biillata, and a hryozoon had fortunately
stuck to the outside of the net. Erom the temperature,
and from the nature of the animals procured hy
the dredge, there could he little donht that Ave had
slipped off the ridge on its western side, and that the
sounding Avas in the southern section of the Avestern
troiigli of the Atlantic. On the folloAviiig day, after
having made good 125 miles, Ave sounded in 2,250
fathoms AA'ith a hottoni of ordinary glohigerina-ooze,
and a hottom-temperature of 1°‘7 C. In the interval
Ave had passed over or close to the position Avhere the
