good-sized turtle is from four to five Imndred-Aveiglit.
I do not think they are hy any means so delicate for
tahle use as the mnch smaller ones in the MYst
Indies.
Eish are abundant round the island, and of many
kinds—mullet, rock-cod, cavallas, and others. They
are apparently good, for tropical fish, hut of little
account to those accustomed to the northern turbot
and haddock. The Avild quadrupeds and decapods,
AA'hich may here he classed together as their habits
and propensities are A'ery similar, are rats and land
crabs ; hoth doing a great deal of damage in the
gardens hy destroying the roots of vegetables and
fruit-trees. The rats kept out of the Avay during
the day, h u t Ave often saAV the crabs, and Ave AA'ere
told to knock them on the head (or Avhatever
ansAvers th a t purpose) Avhenever Ave fell in Avith
them.
I am almost disappointed th a t Ave did not see the
‘ rollers,’ although for many reasons their occurring
ju st at th a t time AVonld have heen very inconvenient.
It must he a Avonderful phenomenon, an enormously
heavy SAvell arising in a perfectly calm sea, Avithout
any apparent cause, and breaking against the lecAvard
coast of the island AA'ith almost irresistible fury.
There Avas a slight threatening of something of the
kind as Ave embarked Avith more than usual difficulty
at ‘ Tartar Stairs ’ on the 2nd of April, and hade
fareAvell to Captain East and his model colony,
thinking Iioaa' comparatively easy it Avas to make a
little corner of the Avorld tidy and comfortable and
in every Avay respectahle—if it Avere under discipline,
and Averc not expected to he self-supporting.
