AVe took along with the last species in Stanley H a rbour
seA'eral specimens of a large species of Asteracan-
tion wliicli formed a marsnpium after the manner so
well described by Sars in Pchmaster sarsii, Muller,
by drawing its arms inwards and forwards, and forming
a brood-chamber over the month. In some samples
of this species the yonng were so far advanced th a t
when tlie mother was placed in a ja r they crept out of
the nursery and Avandered over the glass Avail of their
prison ; this brood bad entirely lost the ‘ pseudem-
bryonic appendages,’ but in tlieir younger condition
these are very apparent, though scarcely so well
developed as in the young of A. violaceus on our
OAvn coast.
On the 27th of January, 1874, at Station 149, off
