In the next series of stations, from Bermudas to
Sandy Hook and Halifax and back to Bermudas, tbe
conditions varied greatly; but by far tbe greatest
abundance of animal life occurred in tbe comparatively
sballow Avater, including one or tAVo of tbe
cod banks off tbe American coast and tbe coast of
Nova Scotia. Tbe fauna of tb a t region Avas of course
on tbe Avdiole Avell knoAvn; some interesting obser-
vations Avere hoAvever made on tbe distribution of tbe
sub-arctic fauna in deeper AA'ater. At one or tAvo
stations off tbe edge of tbe banks several species of
the curious Infulaster-YXv, genus Pourtalesia occurred,
bu t extremely small and dAvarfed, a great contrast to
the fully-developed forms of tbe same group AAhicb
are abundant in the Antarctic sea.

Although most of the dredgings betAveen Bermudas
and Madeira, Avith the exception of a fcAV near the
Açores, were in very deep water, animal life Avas
fairly represented ; and some groups, the Cirripedia
for example, yielded one or two of their largest and
most striking species.

Hie six stations on the section betAveen Madeira
and Station 102 were mostly in water of moderate
depth on a line parallel with the coast of Africa,
and sufficiently near tbe coast to have tbe deposits
sensibly influenced by the presence of land detritus.
Such an admixture of river or shore mud is usuallv
unfavourable to the development of a rich fauna, and
the number of groups represented is accordingly
small.
