Paufus denticornis is clearly of the fame natural family as the reft, having the fame kind o f biarticulated
antennae:: the club is even much larger in proportion, than in the others, and the lateral pointed procefs more
confpicuons; yet according to the charafiter laid down by Afzelius, this ihould not be admitted into the
Paufus genus, the number of joints in each o f the tarsi, or feet, amounting only to three; and on the contrary
in tlie three others they are five in number, notwithftanding that without veiy clofe infpeftion they
appear to confift only o f four. From this circumftaiice, we are o f opinion, that the Linntean charafter while
it paffes clear o f the prolixity o f that eftabliftied by Afzelius, is perfedly fufficient, ” Antennas clavatis,
biarticulatis, clava folida uiicinata.” Or with the omilTion of “ clava folida " it might be (till more applicable.

The thorax in this infeiS is fo deeply divided acrofs the middle that it appears, a t the firft fight, as if it
were really two. Hence it is named thoracicus, but it muft be obferved, at the fame time, that the following
differs very little in this refpedl, the thorax being alfo very deeply divided. P. thoracicus, and
Fichtelii, are pretty nearly alike in other refpefts, and may be of die fame fpecies, differing only in die
fex; the moft ftriking difference prevails in the ftrufture of the antennse, the excavation in one o f which is
o f an oval, or rather fliuttle iliape, and in the other pyriform.
