collefted in North America and Guinea, but the habitat either of tlie Paufus, or the Diopfis in parlicular.
It is very certain was by no means exadtly known. Fueily notwiihftanding defcribes the latter upon this
ambiguous anlhorily, only as a native of Cayenne, and after him Gmellm notes the fame Infeft from
South America, and Guinea perhaps with as little reafon, Latreille tells us it is from the coaft o f Angola,
on the infomiatiou of Perrin, a zealous naturalift of Bordeaux. Our own fpecimens (and they are moft
alfuredly the Diopfis Ichneumonea of Liiinteus) were brought from Bengal, where it was difcovered by
Mr. Fichtel, who has thus eftablilhed the habitat o f this lingular creature beyond difpute.
Linnteus, to whom only this individual fpecies of Diopfis was known, as ufual with him under fuch
circumftances, does not afligii to it any fpecific charaaer. We are acquainted with another fpecies of this
genus, a native o f Africa, in the colleaion of T . Marfliam, Efq. which will render our deviation from his
example excufable, although tlie latter is a t prefent uudefcribed.
