This species was desoribed by Herren Oabmis m d Reichenow as above. It is singularly Kke
H. cjUndricm. but differs in tbe shape of tire oas,ue, and in having the thighs pure ,vb.tc
instead of blael.. A d rwmg oi the type, now in the Berlin Museum, was forwarded to nre by
Dr Cabanis, and is reprodueed in the smaher figm-e ot the plate. Its easque differs m shape
from that of an adult specimen ot the same species in the British Museum, represented m the
ehief figure in flic ülustration: in this last the easque is smooth, and projects forward to a pomt
over the euhnen, the bül also has the furrows fewer and slighter. This last spceimen is stated
to have come from the Gaboon. The plumage of B. M i U a a is black, with green reüect,ons
only, and without any ot the bluish tmts seen on the feathers of its relative. Both species arc
very rare m collections, but few museums possessing examples, and but Mtle is known of the.r
economy or habits ; in fact, as regai-ds the present one we know absolutely nothing.
Male Bül black, with the exception of apical third, which is ycUow. A easqne rises from
base of the maxilla, mcUnes slightly backwards over the bead, then extends by a gradual cnrve
forwar-ds over the point of the maxilla, and rctm-ns by a very acute angle to tho culmcn, which it
teaehcs at about the commencement of the black colour. The posterior termmation and sides oi
the easque along the maxilla are black. Head covered with a loose, rather full crest, and, together
with the neck, back, and breast, it is black, with green reScetions. Wings same colour as the
back, with the exception of two thirds of the secondaries and one third of the primaries (from
their tips), which are pure white. Bump, abdomen, thighs, upper and under taü-eoverts pure
white. Tail also pure white, crossed near the ecntrc by a very broad black band glossed with
green. Tarsi and feet black.
