e a s y t o be distinguished from its n e a r relatives the A. coronaius and A. convexm, yet it h a s been
f r e q u e n t l y confounded with them, and the synonymy has not been an easy task to unravel.
S h a w , as in the case of A. coronatus, conferred the name of alUrostris upon the species,
e v i d e n t l y oblivious of Gmelin's prior name; and many writers have followed him, so that it is
p e r h a p s bet ter k n own by Shaw' s appelktion than by its rightful one of maXOiaricui. It differs
f r o m bot h ooronatus and comexus in h aving the lateral tail-featliers b l a c k t o w i t h i n a shor t distance
of the tips, which are wliite, whe r e a s in the other species these feathers are whol l y whi t e ; and
f r o m coromdus it can i n addi t ion be distinguished by tire black p a t c h on the casque extending
o n t o the maxilla, which is never seen i n examples of the allied species. It has a mor e northern
r a n g e than the ceyronatm. The two species me e t i n t h e j u n g l e s of l l i d n a p o r e , w h e n c e the present
b i r d goes nor t h t o the base of t h e Himalayas, and then e a s twa r d as far as Burmah.
