Adult Male.—Bill and casque white, the latter about equal in height to the hil!. Posterior
margin of casque hidden by feathers, black. The casquc projects back over the head from the
1)ase of the maxilla, and curvcs forwards for about two thirds the length of the bill, terminatingin
an abrupt angle, the upper end inclining forwards nearly to a point; it is broadest at the
posterior margin, and much compressed anteriorly. In some specimens a broad white superciliary
stripe begins just forward of, and above, the eye, and extends to the occiput. Rest of plumage jetblack,
with the exception of about three inches of the tips of the lateral tail-feathers, which arc
white. Bar(i space around the eye blue. Total length 30 inches, wing 13, tail 13, tarsus 1-f, bill
along gape height of bill and casque at base 5|-, length of casque
Female.—Tho, bill and casquc black, the latter moderate in size, and terminating abruptly
anteriorly. A broad white stripe in some examples commences at the base of the casque, goes
above the (¡ye, and extends to the occiput. Host of plumage jet-black, with the exception of the
tips of lateral tail-fcathcrs, which arc white. Bare skin around the eyes livid; iris greyish brown.
