a t t r i b u t e d by Seblegcl and otbors to Temminck. I cannot ascertain that snob a name was over
pubbslicd, but was probably merely a manuscript one attached to some speeimen in the Leyden
Museum. Tbis ot course cannot bo not iced; and Mr. Cassia's name therefore has priority, and is
t h e one tiiat lias been generally adopted. The present species is still rare in collections, altbough
doubtless not uncommon in its natiye haunts. Its long wiiitc crest renders it yery conspicuous
among tlie Bueerotidie, and makes it one of the most attmctiye speeies of tile family. It range.s
f r om Sierra Leone to the Gaboon, though perhaps it is not found in Pantee.
Bill black, a t r iangular yellow spot at base of mai ida. A small thi n casque, wi t h a prominent
ridge on tlie side eitends along the culmen for nearly its entire length, its anterior end being
u p r i g h t . Head eoycred by a long loose full crost, white j the featlicrs on top of head baying
black shafts and tips. Plumage of body blaek. Wings blaek with a green rcflcction; lesser
coverts, sceondai-ies, and primaries tipped with white. TaU dark green, tipped with white.
Total lengt h 24 inches; wing ; tail IG.
Pemale like the male, hut with a smaller bi ü and crest.
