LIMONOPHALUS MONTANI.
SOOLOO nOENBILL.
Buceros montani, Oust. Bull. Hcbd. Assoc. Scien. Irance^ p. 193 (1880).
HAB. Sooloo Island, Sooloo arcliipclago.
This interesting species, described by my friend M. Oustalet, Aide-Naturaliste to the Museum
of the Jardin des Plantes, Pai-is, was procured by MM. Montano and Key, who were sent by tlie
French Government on a scientific mission to the Philippine archipelago. M. Oustalet, in his
short article on the species, compares it to Sphagolobus atratus from Africa. I have not seen
this Sooloo specimen, which I believe is unique; but, judging from Mr. Keulcman's drawing of
the type, I am led to think it represents a different genus from that containing the African species
above mentioned, and, indeed, cannot be placed in any of those in this monograph. I have
therefore proposed for it the term Limonophalus *. Nothing is recorded of its hal)its.
M. Oustalet's description, which is very short, states the total length to be about 80 centim.
(32 inches), the bill black, and surmounted by a casque of 3 centim. (l^- inch) height, also
black. Ilead and body black, with green reflections, tail white. The Plate will give a good
idea of the appearance of this new species. A description of the generic charactcrs is given in
the text accompanyiDg the Plates which illustrate the various genera.
