T .iis riclily colom-cd species o f Grosbeak, wliieb may be considered as a typical example o l tbc genus. Is one
o f the most valuable recent additions to science. It is a bird o f extreme rarity in our Museums ; tbe female,
indeed, o f the pair ivlilch ,ve were fortnnate enough to procure, is tbc only specimen of that sex, wc believe’
wh.ch has hitherto been brought to this country. In a state o f nature it lives on the smaller stone fruits of
the Hmialayai, moiint.ilns ; and its habits, shy .and r e tir in g .^ th e bird inhabiting for the most part the interior
of thick woods,— arc in other respects closely allied to those of the European Coceolhrausles.
In the male, the head, neck, middle o f the baek. wings and tail are black; the back o f the neck, rump, and
under parts generally neb yellow ; tbe thighs are blackish brown ; the bill olive green ; tbc tarsi yellow.
In the female the general plumage is dull grey ; the qnills and tail black ; the rump and abdomen slight
tawny.
