T his very singular species, of whicli a solitary individual formed part of the collection, was a t the time of the
publication of the “ Century” the only one known to scienc e : since tiiat period, however, a second specimen
has been received from tbc Ncpanl hills, and which now forms a portion of the Honourable East India
Company’s collection.
Tlie general plumage o f this bird over the whole o f the iijjpcr surface is dark b rown; the th ro a t and fore-
jiart of tlie neck is marked witli a whitisli loiigitiulinal s tr e a k ; the breast is brown, obscurely blotched with
a darker tint, presenting also a few spots of w h ite ; the under parts are white, spotted irregularly with
b row u ; the beak and tarsi dark horn Iirowii.
The groiiji to which this species belongs seems to have many characters in common with Pomatorhims,
Horsf., the chief mark of separation consisting in the strong and elevated bill. The alliance between these
two groups may serve to indicate the affinities o f the latter, whose place in the general system has been bitlicrto
uiuletennincd.
