T h e collection contained two o r three pairs o f this singular bird, wliich are the only specimens that have ever
come under our notice. Tlie shortness o f the tail, the elongation o f the tarsi, and tlie general contour of the
body, indicate a departure from any o f the more typical forms o f the genus to which it is jiroi’isionally assigned,
and we yet wait for some account of its habits and manners to ascertain its relative situation in nature.
The se.xes ofler well-contrasted diíTerciices in the colour of tlieir plumage.
In the male the crown, back of tlie neck, wings and tail arc black with green reflections,—with this exception,
th a t the tips o f the quill-feathcrs are white, and the secondaries fine rich c h e s tn u t; the whole of the
hack and rump are g r e y ; the throat, breast and under parts white with a roseate tinge, especially about the
flanks and thighs. The upper inaudible is black, the under grey ; the tarsi yellow.
In the female the head and occiput arc dark grey ; the back light brown ; the shoulders olive green, as
are the edges o f the quill-feathcrs, which are otherwise black and tipjicd with white as in the male ; tlie tail
is olive green verging into black, each feather being tipped with yellow ; the breast and under parts are of a
dull brownish white ; beak and tarsi as in the male.
