O r the two species of Fnngilla which tliis Plate represents, and which belong to a well-marked division of
that e.xte,isive genus, tlie F rodopepla is tbe largest, and is equally rare with its accompauyiiig relative.
We would here observe that the present species, together with the F . rosea, and two or three species from
America, form a very natural and interesting group, exhibiting characters which place it iutennediatc
between the restricted genus Fringilla and that o f Pyrrhula. I ’licir habits and manners ajipear to be
those of the European examples o f this immediate form, and w'C doubt not that they undergo similar changes
of phiinagc.
The general colour above is brown, with a warm wash o f roseate especially on the top of the head ; a
broad roseate stripe passes over the cj'e , the wings and tail arc brown, tbe wing-coverts having roseate tips ;
the general ])bimage below is roseate ; the beak and tarsi arc o f a born colour.

'I’rui F . rodochroa is much less 111 size, has tlie roseate colour more generally diifused over the under surface
and, like its relative, is confined to the Himalavan moimtaiiis.
The top of the head is roseate brown ; the superciliary line, throat, and under surface, of a delicate roseate
hue, with a silvery glaze visible in certain lights ; tlie back and wings are of a rich brown, each feather being
iinibre in the c en tre ; rnmp rose a te ; tail brown; the beak and tarsi are o f a born colour.
Both these species arc figured of their natural size.
