EMPALEMENT. Sheath one leaf, very large, oblong,
convolute at the bafe, converging at
t h e top, the belly compreffed, coloured
wiihin.
Sheathed-Fruit-flalk club fliaped quite fimplc,
a liitle Ihorter than the flieath, coloured,
fet round with feed-buds on the lower part,
w i t h e r i n g above the feed-buds.
BLOSSOM none.
CHIVES. Threads none except the honey cups,
which are thick at the bafe and terminated
in thread fliaped tendrils, iifuing in two
rows from the middle of the flieathed fruitflalk.
Tips many, fitting, four fided, fixed
to the fruit-iialk, and diipofed between tha
t « o rows of tendrils.
POINTALS. Seed-buds many, cloathing the bafe
of the fruit-ftalk, fet below the chives, inverfely
cgg-lhaped. Shafts none. Summits
bearded with foft hairs.
SEED-VESSELS. AS many berries, globular, and
one-celled.
SEEDS. Many, roundifli.

THIS pretty plant is a native of the Eaft Indies, in that country from which it derives its fpecific title
I t has muc h afBnity wi t h many others of the Genus, which at firft fight appear rather as varieties, than
m e r i t i n g to be treated as fpecies; but, in this inftance, we fubmit our judgment to that of Dr.'fioxburg,
by whom it has been introduced to us under the name it here bears, in the year 1802 ' Our
