S P E C I F I C CHARACTER.
Lobelia foliis inferioribus ovatis, finuatis, fuperioribus
lanceolatis, dentatis ; petalis
duobus minoribus barbatis; floribus fpieatis;
ftigmatibus bifidis.
Lobelia with the lower leaves egg-fliaped and
fcollopped, the upper ones lance-ihaped
and toothed; the two fmaller petals bearded
flowers grow in fpikesj fummits two-cleft.

T H I S moft delicate little plant, of which our figure reprefents the whole, was raifed in 1801, from
Cape feeds, fent by Mr.Niven from thence, for the Clapham gardens; where our drawing was made
this year, 1803, in the month of Auguft. It is an annual plant, producing its feeds freely, as do
moft fpecies of this genus, which lliould be fown in the month of March, in light iandy peat, and
t-ranfplanted about May.
