flabellately branched, irregularly dichotomous, with lateral forked
ramuli, th e apices acute, p atent or somewhat incurved ; articulations
coated with coloured cellules, those of th e lower branches about twice
as long as broad, of th e upper equal in len g th and breadth, each
armed on th e outer edge with a single, minute, subulate, coloured,
three-jointed prickle ; tetraspores erumpent, whorled round th e jo in t ;
favellæ two- or three-lobed, berry-like, subtended by several patent,
subulate ramuli.

D e sc e . Fronds more or less densely tufted, b u t n o t m a tted together, from two
to three inches high, nearly as thick as hogs’ bristle below, becoming gradually
more slender upwards, and towards the apex as fine as human hair,
divided in an irregularly dichotomous manner, distichous, th e main divisions
liaving a more or less fan-shaped outline, b u t not strictly fastigiate, re peatedly
forked ; th e uppe r branches furnished with more or less numerous,
minute, simple or forked, lateral ramuli from one to two lines in length,
erecto-patent, somewhat constricted a t base, acute and attenuate a t the
point. Axils pa tent in aU pa rts of th e frond. Apices generally spreading,
sometimes slightly incurved, b u t never hooked inwards. Articulations
tolerably uniform, those of the lower p a rt of thestem from once and a half
to twice as long as broad, of the upper branches and ramuli about equal in
len g th and b readth, all coated with a stra tum of minute, coloured cells,
opake, slightly contracted a t th e dissepiment and there furnished on the
outer margin with a single, minute, horizontally patent, subulate, three-
jo in ted prickle. Tetraspores large, tri-p a rtite , with wide pericarps, erumpent,
whorled round the joints. Favella dispersed along the sides of th e
uppe r branches, consisting of two or more rounded, berry-like lobes, with
