Desc r. Root, decumbent, irregularly branched fibres, matted together. Filaments
capillary, from half an inch to an inch m length erect, or decumbent,
forming dense, m'Cgular tufts spreading over the rocks m patches »f ''anoiis
extent, seldom fastigiate; generally, owing to the unequal height of the
lilaments, having a ragged appearance. Branches k f '1“ ’; f
alternate or secund, straight, simple, very erect, destitute of lamuh but
frequently emitting root-like fibres from their lower part, articulated
throuo-hout. ArtiouMiom rather shorter than the diameter, loiigntudiiial y
striate Apices obtuse, seldom sphacelate. Utrides, or spores, ahimdantly
produced along the sides of the upper branclies globose, “
clustered together, sessile, with a narrow pelliicic border, and contaiimig
a dark sporaceous mass. Colour a dull greenish olive, preserved m diyiiig.
Sabslauce rigid, rather harsh, not adhering (or but very sliglitly) to paper,
(lull, and without gloss.
