Plant one inch to one inch and a h a lf high, and of a brownish colour.
Stipes about one-eighth of an inch thick, erect, nearly glabrous, except
at the top, where it is somewhat scaly, firm, solid, or with a cavity filled
with a fibrous pith. Head globose, nearly h a lf an inch in diameter,
at first brown, b u t the outer peridium falling insensibly away, leaves
the inner, membranaceous, permanent peridium of a grey colour, and
smooth surface. Or f e e exactly at the summit, circular, about a line in
breadth, with a short, erect, cartilaginous margin. The interior of the
peridium is filled with a mass of fine woolly Jilaments, and minute globose
reddish sporidia. The filaments arise from the inner periphery of
the peridium.
