Plant 1-2 inches in diameter, u n e q u a lly globose, sessile or somewhat stipita
te ; in th e y o u n g state red d ish -b row n a n d pruinose, a fte rw a rd s sub-
rugose, brow n ish -b la ck ; th e ex te rio r h a rd and b rittle , deciduous, min
u te ly d o tted w ith th e orifices o f th e p e rith e c ia ; th e in te rio r brown,
somewhat spongy, fibrous, shining, an d distin c tly composed o f concentric
strata. Perithecia oblong, w ith a p lan e orifice. Sporidia opake, elliptical.
A large and not rare species, too well marked to require
further illustration. The old genus Hypoxylon now jestored
hy F r i e s , I have here adopted, and shall explain more particularly
hereafter.
