Frons varia (plana, compressa vel cylindrica) . Fructus, capsulce sphoerica:
nucleo globoso sporidiorum.
Frond various (plane, compressed or cylindrical). Fructification, spherical
capsules containing a globular nucleus of sporidia.
SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
Sphærococcus Teedii ; yrowde membranacea, flaccida, compresso-plana, lineari,
vage bi-tri-pinnatifida, ciliis marginaldms subulatis capsulferis, capsulis
solitariis.
S. frond membranaceous, flaccid, nearly plane, linear, vaguely bi-tri-pin-
natifid, with marginal, subulate, capsuliferous ciliæ ; capsules solitary.

till tow a rd s th e apex, where it becomes a tte n u a te d an d a cu te : a t a few
lines above th e root, th e fronds b eg in to pro d u c e numerous branches,
some o f th em often h a lf as long as th e en tire frond, spre ad in g n e a rly
horizontally on each side in a p in n a te d man n e r, an d a tten u a ted a t each
extremity. These pinnæ are set w ith pin n u læ , which in th e ir tu rn
sometimes b e a r a few little b ran ch le ts, b u t in any case have ra th e r dista
n t m a rg in a l ciliæ, or short, slender, su b u late processes, on w h ich th e
capsules are placed. Capsules minute, red , globose, situ a ted mostly
ab o u t th e c en tre o f th e ciliæ, con ta in in g a mass o f v e ry m in u te red
seeds.
