A very beautiful Alga, found on tbe shores of France, Portugal,
Spain, in tbe Mediterranean, and even on tbe coasts of
Cbili and Peru : but as a native of tbe Britisb seas, it was altogether
unknown, till Mrs G r i f f i t h s discovered it in the
year 1811. At the spot where she observed it, it seemed to
have attained its full size, but none of the specimens were in
fructification. The illustration, therefore, of the capsules, I
have borrowed from some individuals communicated to me from
the Ionian islands. It was remarked by my friend Mrs G r i f f
i t h s , that it might be mistaken at first sight, in its growing-
state, for large specimens of Sphærococcus corneus, but was
easily distinguished, independent of other characters, by its comparative
tenderness and flaccidity.
