GENERIC CHARACTER.
Frons membranácea, stipitata vel acaulis, foliácea vel laminosa, rarissime filfo r -
mis. Fructus duplex: capsulce et sori sporidiis terms.—A g .
Frond membranaceous, stipitate or sessile, simply expanded or foliaceous,
very rarely filiform. Fructification dou b le : capsules and clusters of
ternate sporidia.
SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
D e l e s s e r i a Bonnemaisoni; fronde tenuissima, vage f s s a , segmentis cuneato-
subrotundis, soris aut capsulis in disco sparsis; brevissime stipitata, stipite
in basi frondis evanescenti.
D. frond very thin, irregularly cleft, the segments roundish wedge-shaped,
sori or capsules scattered in the disk of the frond, which is very shortly
stipitate, the stem vanishing soon after entering the frond.

H a b . In the sea. Summer. Orkney, Mr C h a r l e s C l o u s t o n . Island
of Bute. I t has been found in England, by Mrs G r i f f i t h s , at Tor-
Abbey rocks, and Budleigh, in the county of Devon ; and by Miss H i l l
at Ilfracombe, in the same county. Fine specimens have also been
communicated to me from Larne in Ireland, by Dr D r um m o n d of
Belfast.
Root a small red, flat, callous disk. Stem from a line to h a lf an inch in
length, as thick as a hog’s bristle, or sometimes a sparrow’s quill, red,
cartilaginous, dividing into a few obscure veins immediately after entering
the frond, and then vanishing. Frond roundish or roundish-
wedge-shaped in its general outline, very thin and delicate, irregularly
cleft into roundish Wedge-shaped segments. Fructification scattered
over the disk of the frond. The Capsules are of small siz e ; the clusters
o f sporidia numerous, small. Substance finely reticulated. Colour rose-
red, changing to fine orange in fresh-water.
Very great uncertainty seems to exist in regard to the real
nature and characters of the group of Delesserice to which the
