H a b . On the dead leaves o f the Hazel (Corylus Avellana), in winter and
spring.
Subgregarious, very minute. Peiithecia at first covered by the epidermis,
at length bursting through it, black, even, glabrous, globose, collapsing
in age, the orifice long, bristle-Hke, very slightly clavate, straight, black.
Asci short, clavate, containing very minute globular sporidia.
So minute is this little well-marked species, that it is a
matter of wonder it should have been figured by S o w e r b y ,
while the preceding larger and more frequent one should have
remained unnoticed. In America, it is found by S c h w e i n i t z
on the leaves of Castanea pumila ; hut in Europe, it appears
to be confined to those of the Hazel.
