G EN ERIC CHARACTER.
Frons JUiJannis, rigida, articúlala, olivácea, ramis distichis vel dichotomis. Sporidia
vel apicibus sphacellatis ramorum inclusa v d in capsulis.
Frond filiform, rigid, jointed, olivaceous, with distichous or dichotomous
branches. Sporidia either included in the sphacellated extremities of
the branches or in capsules.
S P E C IF IC CHARACTER.
S p h a c e l l a r ia hypnoides ; caule subramoso, basi Jilis confervoideis vestito,
caulibus vel ramis decompodto-pinnatis, pinnis pinnulisque alternis, confertis,
omnibus obtusis, articulis pinnarum diámetro oequalibus, estriatis.
S. stem somewhat branched, clothed at the base with confervoid filaments,
stems or branches, several times pinnate, pinnæ and pinnulæ alternate,
numerous, all obtuse, the joints of the pinnæ equal in length and breadth,
without striæ.

Pkmt two to near three inches in height, of a pleasant light green, which
at length becomes tinged with brown. Stems, several thrown up from a
common base, the latter, as well as the lower p a rt of the stems, covered
with reddish confervoid filaments. The stems are either simple (as represented
in the annexed figure), or divided near the base into two or
three elongated branches, thickly set along their whole length with linear
alternate pinnæ ; these are clothed with numerous alternate short pinnulæ,
one o f which is axillary; the latter, again, have their little branch-
lets arranged in a similar way, having also an axillary one : the pinnulæ
and their subdivisions are all obtuse at their extremity. Joints of the
stem longer than they are broad, with three faint transverse lines ;
those of the pinnæ and pinnulæ nearly equal in length and breadth : in
none of the joints are dark striæ observable.
