bridges. A striking feature in the Java landscape is
the enormous height which palms and other trees
attain, leaving those of India far behind in that
respect.
In the cool of the evening it is pleasant walking
amongst the fields and watching the natives getting in
their crops. They cut the paddy by means of a
peculiar little implement, consisting of a semi-circular-
blade about three inches in length, securely fixed
cross-ways upon a piece of bamboo no more than three
and a half inches long, which latter the reaper grasps,
in some ingenious way, allowing the knife to project
between his fingers, and with this he manages to get
through his work in an incredibly quick time. The
