o f thisfpecies is alfo long, but far inferior to that o f the other,
which is a chef d'muwe e f nature in its kind.
T hese birds being peculiar to the land o f Papua or New
Guinea, I have, out o f all fyftem, began with them. I now re-
fume the regular order, and go on with th.e firft proper genus o f
the-lift.

o f an indigo color,-inner coverts carmine : inhabits New Guinea.
Papuan Loeri; Latham, i, 21.3. Bonn. N. Guinee, iii. 175: with
red bill and leg s; head, n.eck, and breaft 0f a lively carmine
color. ,On the hind part o f the head is.an oblong tranfverfe fpot,
o f a moil: ftriking blue above, and violet black beneath; on the
middle of the ,neck behind is another o f a violet black ; wings
ihort, and of a gay green; back, between the ihoulders, of the
fame color; the reft o f the back is ornamented with a ftripe of
bright blue quite to the tail, bounded on each fide by lively red.
On each fide of the breaft, and beneath the thighs, is a fpot o f
bright yellow; upper part o f tfie belly and vent feathers red;
middle o f the belly blue. The tail is for two thirds of its length
green, lower part yellow : two o f the middle feathers exceed the
others greatly in length. This alfo is,a native o f the Papuan
iiles. :

fecondaries black, varied with a few red fpots; a great triangular
fpot o f dark violet marks the farther parts o f the wings

519 : with the whole plumage fcarlet, except the firft primaries,
and the ends of the others, which are black; on the coverts are
two blue fpots, and on the vent another; tail o f a fine carmine
the end chefnut. Inhabits Gilolo.
I t may be obferved that the name o f Loeris is given to fuch
parrots as have the bill weaker, lefs crooked, and more iharp
pointed than the others; which have a more lively look, greater
alacrity and fuddennefs in their movements; their voice more
piercing,
