found in vaft numbers in a ftate o f nature, as well as do-
mefticated, in the province o f Huang-tung, and abundance
are fent from thence to different parts of the empire.
Iris, or peacock-pheafant, iv. 673. This is a native o f the
provinces bordering oh Thibet. The Thibet Peacock o f
M. Brijfm is no other than this bird. It is well figured in
tab. 67,69, o f Mr, Edwards’s w'ork.
P h e a s an t .— Common, iv. 712. This fpecies abounds in all parts
o f China and Chinefe Tartary, as does the' variety with a
white ring round the neck.
Argus, iv. 710. This is a magnificent fpecies found in China.
Mr. Edwards has given two figures o f this rare bird, one
in the Phil. Tranf. vol. Iv. p. 88. and the other never
publiihed, of which he prefented me with feveral. It is
o f the fize of a large turkey-cock; the middle tail Feathers
are two feet long: the primary feathers o f the wings very
broad, and one web moil; attrafiively ocellated. The
hiftory is unknown. Its refidence is in the north o f China
and in Korea. There is irt the Chinefe . empire, a bird,
whether o f this genus I will not determine, with fom’e o f
the tail feathers fix feet and one inch long, and an inch
and a half broad ; colors white, edged with dull buff;
webs as i f ferrated on each fide o f the ihaft with black
