T NOW digrefs to the ftupendous ifland o f New Holland, and
- fairly'eonfefs that the zeal of the zoologift has laid hold o f me,
and that a defire to inveftigate fo fine a field, has made me willingly
fubmit to the impulfe, I ihall clofe the original fubjed by
returning to the Molucca iflands, and breathe my laft words in
their fpicy air, or their latitude. Little hiftory is to be expeded
pf the land I now vifit; brief accounts o f the various difcoverers
is all that can be given till we arrive on the eaftern Coaft; which
the unfortunate acquaintance with in 1770, has peopled with the
profligate outcafts o f our country, cruelly redeemed from the
gibbet to undergo a lingering fife o f nakednefs and famine in
this moil diftant land,
Mew Holland is in length from the north point, in Lat. 11° to V a s t E x t e n t ;
46° 30' fouth, about two thoufand miles, and its greatefi hreadth
from its moil weftern part, in Long, 109° 30', to its moft eaftern
in Long. 152° 30', about three thoufand miles. Its extent in the
fouthern parts is unknown, as much o f the weftern fide remains
