mixed with white ; edges o f the wing feathers tawny, with a

the European,- but diverfified : its great diftintSlion is an upright
creft o f long briftles, riling from the bafe of the bill. The length
o f thisfpecies is nine inches and a half.

index, ii. 665. This is a new fpecies, feven feet high ; the
crown fla t; the head and neck thinly befet with ihort fetaceous
feathers, longeft on the hind part of the head, forming a fort of
creft; throat rather naked, carunculated, and of a bluilh color ;
legs very fcaly, and the hind part regularly ferrated-; on each
foot three toes Handing forward ; wings fo ihort as fcarcely to
be feen, and without quill feathers. The plumage.on the body
is a little curled, and of a brown and grey color; each feather is
double or united at the bafe; it is not an uncommon bird in this
country ; runs fo fwiftly that no greyhound can overtake i t ; the
fleih is faid to tafte like beef.
