whitiih fpines. It can blow itfelf up into the form of a round
ball.
T h i s , and fome other fpecies o f the fame genus, are frequent in
the Chinefe and JapaneJe feas. This fpecimen was taken in the
Ganton river. The effefts o f eating it is dreadful; i f eaten entire,
it is the moft fatal of poifons, and even when dreffed according to
art, has had mortal confequences; yet fuch is the rage of epi-
curifm, that .many pepple jyiH not forbear this tempting.^and.
It is often ufed by fuch who in deipair with to remove them-
felves into the other world. The Chinefe boil with it a branch o f
the Ilhcium anifatum, Kcemp. Amoen. tab. 885, in order to fecure the
* effeiits. Such is the ftrange but true hiftory o f this deadly filh.
