base, smooth or covered with appressed white or pale brown bristly hairs, ending in
a triangular truncate top; imperfeai hlade long-ciliate on the margins, the edges convolute,
1 to 1-5 in., erect, ovate, cordate, cuspidate, decurrent into a wavy fringe bordering
t h e top of the sheath and ending on either side in a long pointed auiicle, that
on one side being bent downwards, that on the other upwards, both fringe and
auricle edged with stiff curved bristles •! to '2 in. long ; Ugule narrow, entire or
slightly toothed. Leaoes small, linear, 3 to 6 in. long by '4 to '7 in. broad, contracted

main vein narrow, secondary veins 4 to 6 p a i r s ; intermediate 5 to 7, f a i n t ; haf-sheaths
smooth, glabrous, ending in a very narrow callus and produced at the sides into long,
narrow, glabrous auricles which are furnished with a few short deciduous ciliaj;
Ugule narrow, inconspicuous. Injlorescence a leafy branching panicle of few verticillate
branchlets, bearing heads of spikelets supported by a glabrous b r a c t ; 7-achis slender,
glabrous, distance between spikelet clusters usually 2 to 2'5 in. Spikelets mostly fertile,
linear, acuminate, hairy, 'o in. long m t h a few empty bract-like glumes or sterile
spikelets between; empty glumes 1-2, ovate-lanceolate, mucronate, white-hairy, about
7- to 9-nerved ; flowering glume similar ; palea as long as flowering glume, 2-keeled,
t h e keels close together, white-pilose on the edges, the tip deeply bifidly mucronate.
Lodicules oblong, about '2 in. long, obtuse, ciliate at the tip, 3- to Ti-nerved, concave
at the base. Stamens at first greenish, then turning yellow ; anthers obtuse or acute.
Ovary ovoid-acummate, rounded, stipitate, smooth, ending in a long three-cornered
style divided above into slightly white hairy stigmas. Curyopsis not known. MELOCA^•NA

• Burma ? : exact country not known, but said by Kurz to have been introduced from
Pegu into the Royal Botanic Gardens, Calcutta. Cultivated also in the Agri-Hordcultural
Society's Garden in Madras, and perhnps elsewhere. Specimeus of a bamboo
planted near the. Kaulagarh Canal, Dehra Dun, resemble this; but the leaves and leaf
Bheaths are more hairy and the culm-sheaths have more rounded auricles.
This species is distinguished from C. pergracile by the pointed culm-sheath auricles
which are directed one upwards, the other down, by the smaller leaves and by the
inflorescence having smaller heads, thicker racliis, and bearing leaves. The spikelets
do not differ much.

7. CEPHALOSTACHYxni viRGATOM, EuTz For. Fl. Burma ii. oGo.
A flub-arboreous bamboo ; culm, culm-sheaths and leaves unknown. Inflorescence a large,
leafless, drooping panicle, bearing on fasciculate branchlets distant lax heads, consisting
of rather few, nearly glabrous, spikelets, supported by a narrow chaffy bract, the fertile
spikelets mixed with sterile ones or empty glumes ; rachis smooth, flattened on one
side, the distance between the heads gradually decreasing. SpVieUts narrow, acute, '5

to -6 in, Ion"-, with 1 to 2 small sterile flowers at the base ; empty glume ovate
mucronate, short; flowering glume -4 in. long, glabrous except a few white hairs,
convolute, coriaceous, shortly mucronate ; palea rather longer than the flowering glume,
nearly glabrous, 2-keeled, keels rather faint and close together, shortly bi-mucronate.
Lodicules lanceolate-acuminate, shortly ciliate, faintly S-neiwed. Stamem with narrow
filaments ; anthers narrow, obtuse. Ovary stalked, ovate, glabrous, surmounted by a
thickened style bearing 2—3 plumose purple stigmas. Caryopsis not known. MELOCANNA

Upper Burma at Keouksik (Kyaulcsit) on the Mogaung river, collected only by
Griffith (see Journal, page 89), No. 6733 of list.
This species, clearly a Cephahstachyum, is distinguished f r om the two preceding by
t h e heads bearing fewer flowers and being nearly glabrous, and by the much tliicker
rachis. It may be hoped that, as Upper Burma is gradually explored, better
specimens may become available.
PLATE No. 97.— Cephahstachyum virgatum, Kurz. 1 & 2, flowering branches—of
natural size; 3, cluster of spikelets; 4, spikelet; 5, empty glume; 6, flowering glume;

L o f t y climbing bamboos, with zigzag culms. Culms moderately tliick, zigzag,
climbing, usually covered by the persistent sheaths. Culm-sheuths thick, loosely-clasping,
wrinkled at the base, where a broad leathery ring remains after the sheath falls;
imperfect Hade long. Leaves large, rather soft in texture, with transverse veinlets.
Injlorescence a lai-ge compound panicle of thin spicate clusters of spikelets. Spikelets
very minute, very numerous, in sub-globose sessile heads or short branchlets,
1-flowered; rachilla short, not articulate, not produced. Empty glumes 1 to 4, broad,
very obtuse, muticous, gradually larger upwards. Floioering glume similar. Palea convoluto,
equal to, or larger than, the flowering glume, not keeled. Lodicules, none. Stamens 6,
free, short. Omry ovate, glabrous ; style short. Caryopsis ovoid, acuminate.
