Familia Geopeltidae nom. nov. (= Geoteuthidae Naef, 1921)
Genus Geopeltis nom. nov.
type: Belopeltis emarginata Voltz, 1840.
For this genus Na e f (1922, p. 122) used the name Geoteuthis
Münster. V o n B ü l o w - T r umme r (1920, p. 252), however,
designated „Geoteuthis Bollensis (Schübler) v. Zieten sp.” *) as the
type of that genus. Geoteuthis Münster, 1843, therefore has to be
considered a synonym of Loligosepia Quenstedt, 1839.
Species belonging to the genus Geoteuthis Naef nec Münster have
been referred to the genera: Onychoteuthis, Ommastrephes, Teudop-
sis, Belemnosepia, Loligosepia, Acanthoteuthis, Belopeltis, Palaeo-
sepia, and Loliginites.
The genera Onychoteuthis Lichtenstein, 1818, and Ommastrephes
-------------- *) Z i e t e n described two different speciesA as Loligo Bollensi.s i.n .hi s book dated ,1830
bu t issued 1830—1833. From the synonymy on p. 253 of the catalogue by v. B ü 1 o w—
T r ü m m e r it appears that the species described on p. 34 and figured plt 25 fig. 6 by
Z i e t e n is meant here. The name aalensis Z i e t e n , 1832, which has priority of
position should be used for this species.
