T EYL ER’S MUSEUM
SYSTEMATIC CATALOGUE OF THE PALAEONTOLOGICAL
COLLECTION
SIXTH SUPPLEMENT (TEUTHOIDEA)
by
C. O. VAN REGTEREN ALTENA
1. Introduction
A catalogue of the palaeontological collection of Teyler’s Museum,
by T. C. W i n k l e r , appeared in six parts from 1865 to
1867. Afterwards (1868-1896) five supplements were published by
the same author. Since 1896, however, the accurate and assiduous
work of Wi n k l e r has not been carried on, although important
additions have been made to the collection. Hence the greater part
of W i n k 1 e r’s catalogue has been in increasing need of revision.
Soon after my appointment as Curator of the Mineralogical-
Palaeontological Collections of Teyler’s Museum I therefore resolved
to start a card catalogue in which the fossils added since
1896, as well as those of which the identification had been revised,
could be indexed. It is my intention to publish new supplements to
the old catalogue whenever a whole systematic group or a whole
fauna has been indexed in this new card catalogue.
The present supplement contains the suborder Teuthoidea
of the ten-armed Cephalopods. All the material available belongs
to the two extinct groups Prototeuthoidea and Mesoteuthoidea
created by N a e f, which are confined to Mesozoic deposits. This
paper is almost wholly a revision of W i n k 1 e r’s identifications,
which are to be found on pages 388-394 of his catalogue, and on
page 143 of his third supplement. The specimens which have been
added since W i n k 1 e r ’s time, and those not yet numbered by
him, bear numbers higher than 15700.
