I n th e expression of em otion and passion, w hether by gesture
or in th e countenance, th ere is sufficient uniform ity to make it the
subject o f art and reasoning; and although we may no t obtain at
once a perfect rationale o f this curious and interesting science,
som ething we hope has been done in discovering th e course o f th at
influence by which th e m ind operates on th e body.
It is interesting in a very high degree to mark the traits of
emotion, and compare them with the anatomical structure; and
amidst the severer studies of anatomy, as connected with health
and disease, I have been able, without departing too far from my
professional pursuits and duties, to pass many pleasant hours in
observing and investigating the anatomy of expression. In the
