given: and somewhat more than a mile farllicr inland arc the
remains o f a spacious theatre, witli many other ntiiis, which clearly
indicate, tliat some ancient city o f considerable magnitude once
existed here. This the vast number o f ciirions sepulchres in the
vicinity farther confirm; all o f which appear to have Iwcn opened,
though vases containing ashes arc still to Ix; found in some o f
them. There arc besides sepulchral grots cut in the rock, the
architecture and sculptures o f which deserve notice.
