fluctuating like the curves on a weather chart, and denoting,
after centuries of fruitless strife, the ingress of the pale-faced
marauders of the civilised world, whose footsteps have a
hideous following of fleshless frames, showing the wake of
the worshippers of the only God, whom they preach as the
incarnation of justice, freedom, and mercy.
. Our conclusions would be that all the efforts of the most
indomitable and intrepid races of mankind to gain a lasting
footing in this coveted land have, in the ages that are gone,
been fruitless. There must be something stronger than
war, something more potent than gunpowder, something
more pregnant even than the Gospel, that has acted like a
centrifugal force in throwing off and destroying every
encroaching element.
Mayhap with the rise of an irresistible tide of progress
the sun of prosperity may appear, dissolving the clouds of
storm and strife from the face of this unhappy land, and
shedding for ever a light of peace and joy, making the
hitherto inaccessible home of the black man a World’s
Elysium.
