47. Harpa minor, Lamarck.
Darros Island, ou the shore.
48. Mitra episcopalis, Linné.
Mozambique.
49. Mitra coronata, Chemnitz.
Darros Island, in 22 fms.
50. Mitra luctuosa.
A. Adams ; Soiuerhy, Thesaurus Conch, vol. iv. fig. 229.
Darros Island, in 22 fms.
This species is of a dark olive-broAvn colour, having a single
yellow line around tbe upper p art of the whorls. I t is spirally
punctate-striate tbrougbout, consists of ten whorls, and has five
plaits on tbe columella, of which the lowermost is insignificant.
51. Mitra tenuis. (P late XLIV. fig. X.)
Sowerhy, Thesaurus, vol. iv. p. 6, fig. 327.
Seychelles, in 4-12 fms.
The locality of this species has hitherto been unrecorded. I t is a
thin, narrow shell, of a light yellowish-brown colour, having a pale
zone at the upper part of tbe whorls, another around tbe middle of
tbe last, and a third less distinct one towards the base. Whorls 10;
five apical excentric, smooth, convex, pale, the rest normal, almost
flat at tbe sides, separated by an oblique suture, sculptured througb-
out Avith spiral striae and lines of growth. Tbe aperture is verv
much narrowed above and widens considerably below. Tbe columella
is oblique and armed with four plaits. Length 12-1-millim.,
diameter 34, aperture 5-4 long.
Sowerby s figure of tbe type, now in tbe British Museum, is considerably
enlarged, and represents the aperture a little too long in
proportion to the spire, and only two plaits on the columella are
indicated, whilst no mention whatever is made of this character in
tbe text. The “ light fulvous band ” is not at tbe upper part of
the whorls as stated, this portion being pale and tbe band falling
lower down.

Mitra echinata, A. Adams, Proc. Zool. Soc. 1850, p. 138.
Cerf Island, Mascarenes, in 10 fms.
I I
M. concentrica, Reeve, which is regarded by some authors as a
variety of this species, is, I think, sufficiently distinct. Tbe spire
is rather more acuminate, tbe whorls are not angular, tbe costæ
more numerous and not acutely noduled.
54. Turricula (Callithea) modesta, lieeve.
Darros Island, in 22 fms. ; also Mauritius {Sowerhy ¿f Liénard) ;
Philippines {Cuming).
55. Turricula (Callithea) bipartita. (P late XLIV. fig. 0 .)
Shell small, fusiformly ovate, having tbe spire and tbo upper
ball of tbe body-wborl white, and tbe lower half stained witb a
dirty pale flesh-coloured band beneath and pinkish white at the
extremity. Whorls 8 ; three apical smooth, convex, the rest a little
convex at tbe sides, longitudinally costate and spirally grooved.
Costæ about 14 in number on the penultimate wborl, attenuated
inferiorly on the last, and not quite cut across by the transverse
sulci ; these are deepish, not quite so broad as the interstices,
numbering from 6 to 7 on tbe penultimate volution and about 16
on tbe las” . Tbe aperture is small, occupying_ less than half the
length of the sbeU. Tbe columella is pale pink, covered with a
thin callus bearing four oblique plaits. The outer lip is thin, and
armed within with about eight thread-like liræ. Length 6 millim.,
diam. 2 |.
Provid-GncG Kccf and Corf Island, Mascaroiics, in 10—24 itns.
This is a very small species, but probably adult, as tbo more
crowded character of tbe costæ behind tbe labrum indicates. The
dirty fleshy zone around the middle of tbe body-wborl is sometimes
slightly visible upon tbe spire just above tbe suture.
56. Marginella picturata. (P late XLIV. fig. P.)
MargineUa (Glabella) picturata, G. 8; H. Nevill, Journ. As. Soc. Bengal,
1874, vol. xliii. pt. 2, p. 23, vol. xliv. pi. 8. f. 89; copied by Wein-
kauff, Conch.-Cab. pi. 22. figs. 13, 14.
Poivre Island, Amirantes, in 20 fms. ; Mauritius {Nevill).
A very pretty specimen from Poivre Island is somewhat differently
painted, tbe spots upon the white zones being curved or
almost arrowbead-sbaped, and in four series upon tbe body-whorl ;
two of these, namely one a little below tbe suture and tbe other
just beneath tbe middle, are less distinct than tbe others, which
fall above and below tbe lower more indistinct one. The outer bp
has a fourth red spot at tbe upper extremity, and tbe anterior end
of tbe columeUa is tinged witb the same colour.
