This pretty little species m ust not be confounded witb G. galaxias,
Reeve (Conch. Icon. figs. 229 a, h). The latter bas a similar interrupted
line a t tbe upper part of tbe whorls, and an indication of a
second towards tbe base of the last, but is nevertheless quite distinct,
being destitute of tbe roundly meshed network, and more elongate
in form. I t has an opaque-white dotted line immediately aboA-e tho
suture falling round the middle of the body-whorl, and consists of
tAVO more normal volutions than C. moleculina.

Of th is little species I have several examples before me in a d u lt
condition. I n th e se I count five n o rm a l whorls an d th re e n u c le a r,
th e former b eing n e a rly s tr a ig h t a t tb e sides and th e la tte r convex.
The lab rum is b u t Amry little th ickened, has a shallow sin u a tio n above
an d a feAV denticles w ith in . Tbe columella is su b pe rpendicular,
coA'ered Avitb a th in callus, h av in g a p rom in e n t fre e m arg in .
29. Columbella rufopiperata, (P late XLIV. fig. I.)
Shell minute, ovate-fusiform, flesh-coloured, everywhere minutely
dotted Avitb red and marked witb an indistinct pale line around tbe
middle of tbe body-wborl. Volutions 7, three apical smooth,
convex ; _ tbe rest somewhat gradated, flat at tbe sides, very strongly
longitudinally costate. Ribs about twelve in number, continuous
up tbe spire, rounded, thick, having tbe upper end crossed by
a shallow groove, giving tbe whorls a margined appearance. The
body-whorl is convex at tbe middle, somewhat contracted below,
transversely grooved at tbe base, with tbe costæ less strongly developed
as tbe labrum is approached. Aperture very small and
narrow,_ ouly slightly contracted into a short oblique canal ; the
oiiter bp is distinctly sinuated beloAv tbe suture and thickened
Avitbin. Tbe columella is rounded, prominent at the middle, and
covered witb a callus. Length 3 millim., width 1^.
Etoile Island, Amirantes, 13 fms.
T his m in u te species to th e n ak ed eye appears to be of a p in k ish -
brown colour, b u t on ex am in a tio n Avith a lens is seen to be m in u te ly

v e ry s tro n g for so small a shell.
30. Columbella amirantium. (P late XLIV. fig. X.)

Whorls 8 ; five nuclear convex, pink, finely longitudinally lirate;
the rest strongly costate and rather convex at the sides. The ribs
are thick, rounded, about sixteen in number on tbe penultimate
wborl, subobsolete behind the labrum. The last volution is broad
above, contracted inferiorly, tbo extremity being crossed by several
coarsish grooves and ridges. Aperture narrow, only a little nar-
roAved anteriorly into a slightly oblique open canal. Outer lip
much thickened by a strong external Avhite varix, marked with two
brownish-pink spots, one above and the other below tbe middle; it
is also internally thickened, armed with eight denticles, and sub-
sinuated a t the upper end. Tbe columella is covered Avitb a callus
bearing about five small tubercles near tbe middle. Length 5 |
millim., width 3.
Eagle Island, Amirantes, 12 fms.; sand and coral bottom.
This is a very pretty little species, having tbe same form as the
typical group of the genus.

Providence Reef, Mascarenes, 24 fms.; and He des Xeufs, Amirantes,
in 15 fms.
Re eve ’s figure is fa irly good in respect of form b u t m isle ad in g as

32. Columbella albocaudata. (P late XLIV. fig. L.)
Shell small, ovate-fusiform, pale pink, paler at tbe apex and white
at tbe extremity of the body-whorl, bordered above witb a few
spots of a reddish colour. Whorls 8 ; four apical glossy, excentric,
convex; the rest less swollen, separated by a moderately deep
suture ; last wborl scarcely angled at the middle, contracted
towards the anterior end, which is transversely grooved and ridged,
the ridges being about tAvelve in number. Aperture small, contracted
anteriorly into a short open oblique canal. Labrum thin at
tbe edge, strengthened witb a A-arix at a little distance from the
margin, which is distinctly sinuated towards tbe upper part, and
furnished within witb about five denticles. Columella perpendicular,
arcuate at the middle, covered with a thin caHus supporting about
four cross tubercles. Length 6 millim., width 2^.

coral.
