The costæ are seven in number on the last volution, and eight or
nine on the upper ones. There are two principal transverse ridges
on the latter, with a smaller one between them, the uppermost
being situated at the angle about the middle of the whorls, and tbe
lowermost a t the suture below. Tho body-wborl has three stout
ridges round the middle part, and two rather more slender ones
below, in addition to the raised squamous ridgo around the cauda or
extremity. Ou crossing tbe costæ these ridges are considerably
produced into prickly boUow scales, and aro everywhere crossed by
very fine elevated lines of groivth. The aperture is lilac, not greatly
contracted anteriorly, and, together with the canal, occupies about
half the entire length of tbe shell. The outer lip is armed within
witb about six short liræ ; and tbe columella exhibits a tubercle
at tbe upper part and one or two below the middle. Tbe canal is
short, open, and recurved. Leugtb 8 millim., greatest width 4 /

21. Murex (Ocinebra) darrosensis. (P late XLIV. fig. F.)
Shell small, fusiformly ovate, white, spotted upon and between the
ribs witb pale and dark brown. Whorls 7, tbe apical smooth,
convex; the rest subconcavely sloping above, angulated near the
middle, straigbtisb at the sides, longitudinally costate and spirally
ridged. Costæ moderately strong, about nine on a wborl, produced
into angidar prominences where crossed by the cliief transverse
liræ ; tbe latter are three in number ou tbe upper volutions, all
on tbeir lower half, and five or six on the last. In addition to
these, tbe surface is ornamented witb several finer intervening liræ
aud very fine lines of growth. Tbo aperture is rather opeu, ovate,
contracted into a short, open, oblique, recurved caual, and somewhat
stained ivitb yellow. The labrum has a broad varix exteriorly, and
about eight fine liræ within. The columella is arcuate above,
yeUowish, and bears a small tubercle or two below tbe middle.
Length 11 millim., greatest width 6.
Darros Island, Amirantes, 22 fms. ; broken-coral bottom.
This species closely resembles Ai. nitens, A. Adams, but is
smaller, has the upper part of tbe whorls more concave, and more
numerous longitudinal costæ.

26. Columbella seycbellensis. (P late XLIV. fig. G.)
Shell small, narrow, ovate-fusiform, opaque white, irregularly
blotched witb brown. Whorls 9, three apical smooth, concave ;
the rest only very slightly concave, separated by a linear suture,
above which revolves a white line dotted with brown, which also
passes round the middle of tbe last w b o rl; this is uot much contracted
at the lower part, around which there are about balf-a-
dozen oblique grooves. The aperture is long and narrow, together
with tbe oblique basal canal occupying rather less than tbe whole
length of the shell. The outer lip is thickened externally by a
broadish white varix. The columella is nearly perpendicular at the
middle, and covered witb a thin callosity. Length 8 millim.,
greatest width 3.
Sevcbelle Islands, 4 -12 fms.
This curious little species is somewhat cbrysaloid in form. Tho
outlines of tbe spire are ju st a little concave below the apex, and
gradually become slightly convex lower down. The outer lip in the
single specimen a t band is smooth within, having been inhabited by
a minute Pagurus ; but it is very probable th at fine lirm will be met
witb in other specimens.

{Pease, in Brit. Mus.) ; Makeira Harbour, San Cbristoval, Solomon
Islands {J. Brazier, in Brit. Mus.).
This species, although characteristically figured in tbe above unfinished
monographs, has not, I believe, been as yet described. I t
is small, ovately fusiform, glossy, white, covered with a network or
connected circles of a yellowisb-brown colour, varied witb two
interrupted dark-brown transverse lines, one at tbe upper part of
the whorls a little below the suture, where tbe ground-colour is at
times opaque snowy white, and tbe other, consisting of less elongate
spots, round tbe base of tbe body-whorl. Volutions 8, smooth,
three apical convex, tbe rest nearly flat at tbe sides, very faintly
gradated; the last rounded at tbe middle, contracted beneath, and
strongly transversely grooved at tbe extremity. Aperture small, contracted
into a short oblique canal in front. Outer lip strengthened
witb a remarkably broad external varix, distinctly sinuated_ a little
below the suture and armed within witb six small denticles, of
which tbe second and third below tbe sinus arc usually tbe largest.
Columella covered with a callus bearing threo or four elongate
transverse tubercles at tbe loiver part. Length 6 millim., width 2^.
